In rural areas septic systems are used to treat sewage and are not serviced by public utility sewers. A septic system is simply a large tank buried underground that holds sewer waste from your home. Sewer waste flows through the pipes in your home and are directed into the septic tank. The tank is filled with chemicals that easily break down the waste into carbon dioxide, methane, and water. This sewage eventually flows through a network of pipes within a drainfield. This drainfield is comprised of many perforated pipes that are surrounded by gravel or sand. This allows the waste to slowly be released into the soil where it will continue to break down.
